ARTICLE 3: Nothing outside of Christ will count in Eternity & Amend your ways

N-Nothing outside of Christ and His work will count in Eternity;

What are those things that will count in Eternity?

  1. Preaching the gospel to the unsaved.

Christ Jesus instructed all believers to preach the gospel of His salvation; His death, burial, and resurrection to the unsaved who do not know God as He revealed Himself in Christ.

Now all things [are] of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 2 Corinthians 5:18

  1. Discipleship.

One way we show we are good stewards of the Christian faith is by teaching and instructing new believers in the Gospel and in good works. Jesus’ last instruction before He ascended into heaven was

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, [even] to the end of the age “Matthew 28:19-20

  1. Spiritual disciplines

One of the things that will count in eternity is our investment in our spiritual growth. Investing time in the spiritual disciplines of meditation, prayer, fasting, and study, solitude, submission, service, confession, worship, guidance, and celebration will see us grow spiritually. The more mature we are as believers the more responsibilities God can entrust to our care.

“Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment”.1peter2:2

  1. 4. Contributing to the growth of the local church

Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.  And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. Heb 10:24-25

The writer of the book of Hebrew warns against forsaking the assembly of saints. In such gatherings, the believer is taught the word, so that we can become more effective in preaching the gospel and instructing younger believers in the word of God. We also sharpen one another and support each other in so many ways. This noble task will also be rewarded.

  1. Generosity

God rewards us when we give; to those who are in need and to support the work of God; in the church, missionary work, humanitarian work, and so on.

And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. As the Scriptures say, “They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.” 2 Cor 9:9-10

  1. Good deeds done for God’s sake

Good deeds acts of kindness done for Christ’s sake will be rewarded. Jesus uses giving a cup of cold water to a believer to teach this. He said, anyone who does this, will not lose their rewards.

“And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold [water] in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.” Matthew 10:41-42.

  1. Persecution/suffering for the sake of the Gospel.

“Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great [is] your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:11-12

Many shrink away from this. But Jesus taught that if you’re persecuted, mocked, or reproached for His namesake, you will receive great rewards. Apostle Paul also taught that if we share in Christ’s suffering we will also share in His glory.

And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ, we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering. Rom 8:17

Engaging in secular activities like working to make a living, marriage, childbearing, building a career or business, etc, are very important and essential to life. But as necessary as they are,  none of them will count in eternity. They will only be as important as long as our time on earth lasts.

  • Amend your ways

So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin.  You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God. You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy—their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols. 1 Peter 4:1-3

We are bought with a price the precious blood of Jesus. We should therefore live for Him who is our Lord and Savior who laid down His life for us. What can we give to show our gratitude but to give our lives to serving Him?

Let us repent of selfish living and renew our minds with the word of God, and then we will come to see as God sees and understand how to serve Him. Like a smart businessman let us invest our time here on earth on things that will yield eternal rewards by reprioritizing our pursuits in life to align with God’s purpose on earth.

For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1Corinthians 6:20
